The human muscular system is a system that allows the human body to move and perform actions. Muscles (musculus) are parts of the body that consist of cells, bones, and connections that allow movement. In the human muscular system, muscles are divided into two main types, namely skeletal muscles and smooth muscles.

The human muscular system also consists of tendons (yellow bones) which connect muscles to bones or other muscles, as well as ligaments (white bones) which connect bones to other bones or muscles.

In general, the human muscle system works coordinatively to carry out movements and actions. Muscles work together with the nervous system to enable control and coordination of movement. The human muscular system is also involved in metabolic and digestive processes to support the energy requirements needed to carry out movements and actions.

Muscle structure:

Human muscles consist of thousands of long, slender muscle fibers. Each muscle fiber is wrapped in connective tissue that forms tendons that attach to bones. These muscles work together to enable body movement.

Muscle function:

The main function of muscles is to produce movement. Skeletal muscles work as pairs of agonist and antagonist muscles to move skeletal bones and cause movement. Apart from that, muscles also play a role in maintaining body posture, maintaining body temperature, and moving internal organs such as the heart and intestines.

Muscle type:

There are three main types of muscles in the human body:

  • Skeletal muscles (skeletal muscles): Skeletal muscles are muscles that are related to bones and form parts of the body such as the thighs, arms and trunk. Skeletal muscles consist of nerves (neuromuscular junctions) that allow electrical impulses from the otitis (nervous system) to reach the muscles and trigger contractions. Skeletal muscles work voluntarily, namely with mental control. These muscles are attached to bones and allow voluntary body movements. Skeletal muscles can be controlled consciously by the nervous system.
  • Smooth muscles: Smooth muscles are muscles associated with organs in the body such as the heart, urinary tract and food pipe. Smooth muscles are not connected to bones and work involuntary, that is, without mental control. These muscles are found in the walls of body organs such as the stomach, intestines and blood vessels. Smooth muscles are not controlled consciously and function to move food, blood and body fluids.
  • Cardiac muscle: This muscle is found in the walls of the heart and is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. Heart muscle has automatic contractions that are regulated by the nervous system and hormones.

Muscle contraction:

Muscles work by contracting and relaxing. When muscles contract, the muscle fibers contract and produce a force that pulls on the bones connected to them. When the muscles relax, the muscle fibers lengthen again and the bones return to their original position.

Exercise and fitness:

Regular exercise and physical activity is very important for maintaining muscle health and strength. Weight training, such as lifting weights, can help strengthen skeletal muscles. Aerobic exercise, such as running or swimming, can also help maintain heart muscle strength and health.
