San Francisco

San Francisco is a famous city in America located on the west coast in the state of California. The city is built on 43 hills, giving it its typical appearance of steep roads. In the 1960s, San Francisco was the capital of the hippie movement and much of that can be seen today. It is also a real paradise for homosexuals. Unfortunately, San Francisco also experiences earthquakes. There are several buildings that are known to have survived earthquakes.

Famous sights in San Francisco

There is a lot to see in San Francisco. The most famous sights are listed below. These are places that you must see when you visit this city.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge was built in 1937 and is one of the most famous bridges in the world. The bridge is approximately 2.7 kilometers long and 227 meters high. The Golden Gate is almost always covered in scaffolding, because the renovation work can be done again once the entire bridge is done. The bridge has a typical orange color and therefore stands out. Very often the bridge is covered in fog, making the view from the bridge but also of the bridge very minimal. Yet very beautiful photos are often taken when the fog is there. The fog is usually the worst in the months of July and August. From the bridge you can see Alcatraz Island on a clear day. Just across the Golden Gate Bridge is the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. There is a road that goes up and from this point you have a nice view of the bridge. It is recommended to rent a mountain bike. This allows you to cycle through Fisherman’s Wharf, cross the bridge and then take a ferry back.

Fisherman’s Wharf

Fishermans Wharf is a well-known tourist attraction. There are many souvenir shops and restaurants. Most restaurants have fish dishes. Dishes such as mussel soup or lobster are very popular here. But the pasta dishes with fish in them are also good to eat. At pier 39 you can see hundreds of sea lions. This was once a mooring place for boats, but the sea lions have made it their own place. There are also many shops at the pier, including a shop that only sells chocolate.

Alcatraz

Alcatraz is the famous prison located in San Francisco Bay. The prison was in use from 1934 to 1963. Today, tourists can visit the prison and learn about what it used to be like with an audio tour. It is advisable to book in advance on the internet if you want to visit Alcatraz. This saves a long queue. Are you in San Francisco for several days? Chinatown

Chinatown is very famous in San Francisco. More than 80,000 Chinese live in the city area. The environment is also really typical Chinese: instead of English, everything is written in Chinese. And the buildings also seem to come from China. Because Chinatown is centrally located in San Francisco, it is a real tourist attraction. Good food is also possible here and is therefore highly recommended. The famous fortune cookies have been invented in the restaurants here. And not as many people think in China itself.

Alamo Square

Alamo Square is a very famous place in San Francisco. It is a small park, but it is still visited by many tourists. If you look east from this park, you will have a view of the famous Painted Ladies. These are six houses that are identical, but each have a different color. The houses are also known from the series Full House and are the most photographed houses in San Francisco. The Painted Ladies survived the 1989 earthquake. If you stand a little higher on the hill of the park, you have a nice view of the skyline.

Financial District

The Financial District is the center for San Francisco’s business people. There are skyscrapers such as the famous Transamerica Pyramid. It’s fun to watch the business people go to lunch around noon. This way you can get a taste of real American life. Shopping is good in Union Square, a large shopping center.

Lombard Street

Lombard Street is a one-way road and is the road with the most hairpin bends in the world. The small section has no fewer than ten hairpin bends and goes steeply downwards. If you have rented a car, you should definitely drive off this road. People with a lot of stamina can walk up the sidewalk along the street. Near this winding road you will find Chessnut Street, with all kinds of restaurants and shops.

Asian Art Museum of San Francisco

San Francisco is known for its Cable Cars, the trams that run through part of the city. In the Cable Car Museum you can learn everything about these trams and how they work.

California Academy of Sciences

The California Academy of Sciences is one of the ten largest natural history museums. It is also one of the oldest. All kinds of research is still being done. You can find, among other things, an aquarium and a planetarium. The museum attracts half a million visitors a year and is located in Golden Gate Park.

Cartoon Art Museum

The Cartoon Art Museum specializes in comics and cartoons. There are more than six thousand images and it is therefore very interesting to visit for the enthusiast. The museum is located on Mission Street.

Exploratorium

The Exploratorium is a science museum, where you can do a lot. Turn wheels, press buttons or put your hand on something. You will learn a lot in the scientific field this way. Demonstrations are also given regularly. It is one of the most popular museums in San Francisco and attracts more than half a million visitors every year. The Exploratorium is located at the Palace of Fine Arts.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

This museum is often abbreviated to SFMOMA. This is the first museum on the west coast of America that focused on twentieth century art. It is located near the Yerba Buena Gardens.

Zeum

Zeum is a museum that is mainly intended for children. It is an interactive museum where children can learn a lot about technology. For example, they can make a clay figure and create a short animation with it. Zeum can be found at Yerba Buena Gardens.

San Francisco Restaurants

You can eat anywhere in San Francisco. This article already contains some tips on where to eat well. The city has a great diversity of restaurants: fish, Italian, Chinese, American, French. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, you also have a wide choice. No matter how crazy you think it is, it is there. The price range also varies enormously. So whatever you want, it’s there. Fish can be purchased for these sea lions to feed them. Would you rather not eat fish, but see it? Then you can visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Many Americans call this the most beautiful aquarium in America. It is located near the water and has all kinds of beautiful sea creatures.

Big Sur

Big Sur is extremely popular with tourists thanks to its beautiful beaches and highways. The road goes along the coast and every spot is worth a photo. Highly recommended is Hearst Castle, a castle on top of a hill that is bizarrely large. A tour can be taken to the castle, where you will see the house and pools with gold tiles. Just make sure you are on time and reserve in advance. The last tour is at 3:00 PM. It is also a very popular destination among tourists. After Disneyland, it is the most popular destination in California.
