One Billion Rising – V-Day, resistance against abuse of women

One in three women in the world will experience abuse or rape during their lifetime. This means that one billion girls and women will fall victim to this at least once in their lives. The UN report on Violence against Women describes this horror story. One Billion Rising wants to do something about it and organizes an annual day, V-Day, to stand up against abuse of women and activities that expose abuse of women and support women in their fight against abuse. ‘One billion’ refers to a billion people: if a billion people go outside to dance on February 14, something will happen. Then the Earth moves.

V Day

V-Day is the international day to show resistance against abuse of women. V-Day has been organized since 1999.
One of the activities that V-Day organizes in One Billion Rising. The One Billion Rising platform , which lists global actions, was launched in 2012.

V-Day is based on four pillars:

  1. Art has the power to change thinking
  2. Ordinary people can do unusual things
  3. Locally, women are standing up as leaders of action
  4. Look at the intersection of different aspects (race, class, gender) to understand violence against women

The V-Day movement is growing rapidly. In almost 200 countries around the world, people are active in various ways to end violence against women. The V of V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina. V-Day is on Valentines Day, Valentine’s Day.

Eva Ensler

The founder of V-Day is Eva Ensler. She is the author of the Vagina Monologues and she brings the ambitious plan of One Billion Rising to the agenda.

V-Day wants to put the horrible subject of abuse and rape on the agenda and draw attention to it in a creative way.

One Billion Rising

On the V-Day of One Billion Rising, everyone, women and all who love women, can get up, leave home and work and dance to stand with abused and raped women and call abusers and rapists to order.
If the number of one billion people dancing on the same day is reached, the earth will move.

Figures and facts

America

One-third of women’s murders in the US are committed by their own partners.

South Africa

Every six hours in South Africa a woman is murdered by her partner.

Circumcision

Millions of women have been maimed for life by genital mutilation. It is estimated that between 130 and 140 million living women and girls have undergone some form of circumcision. That fate looms for three million girls.

Dowry

Failure to meet the dowry is grounds for murdering the woman in question. Honor killings and dowry killings kill 5,000 women every year.

Slave

More than 1.5 million women are trafficked into slavery every year.

Arranged marriages

Around the world, more than 60 million girls under the age of 18 are married off every year.

Sexual violence

The numbers for sexual violence against girls and women are staggering. The percentage varies per country.
And some shocking figures:

  • Ethiopia 1%
  • Peru 11%
  • Samoa 11%
  • Tanzania 11%

Workplace

Sexual harassment and unwanted advances in work situations are very common. In Europe, 40 to 50% of women suffer from it.

The Netherlands

The Netherlands also has victims of sexual violence and abuse. Every year, 200,000 women are victims of this, and every day there are more than 500 women in need. The Netherlands has its own version of the One Billion Rising Campaign. On February 14, the global day of action is also celebrated in the Netherlands with dancing and activities. Visit the Facebook page of One Million Rising Amsterdam: www.facebook.com/OneBillionRisingAmsterdam to register for an activity. Stay Group is participating in this global day of action in the Netherlands.

The following activities are organized in Amsterdam :

  • Flash mob
  • Ribbon through the city
  • Party

You can register for a promotion or performance on the One Billion Rising website. There are many different ways to stand up against violence:

  • Theater
  • Dance
  • Music
  • Fundraising
  • To write
  • Workshops

Money raised through fundraising activities is spent on V-Day campaigns, such as the campaign against rape of girls and women in Congo or assistance to girls and women in Haiti who are frequently molested and sexually abused after the earthquake.

Valentine’s Day

V-day is on Valentine’s Day, February 14. Not all Valentine’s Day celebrants are happy with this day being V-Day. They would rather not see any attention for rape and incest on the day of romance and love. The V-Day organization sees the ultimate goal as creating a world where all women can live freely and safely.
