The beginning of Starbucks
In 1971, the first Starbucks store opened in Seattle, creating the largest and most successful chain of coffeehouses in the world. The company, which has nearly 20,000 locations around the world, started out under the leadership of three men: Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker. The first two were teachers and Bowker was a writer.
They established the first Starbucks at 2000 Western Avenue, but it was later moved to 1912 Pike Place.
Starbucks expansion
In 1982, Howard Schultz also joined, who, inspired by the espresso bar in Milan, began to further expand the organization. In 1987 there were 17 locations, this grew to 33 in 1988, 55 in 1989 and over 100 in 1991.
In 1994 the first drive-through Starbucks was opened, where you could get a quick coffee on the go. Not only is a simple coffee offered, but the range has already been expanded to other drinks, ice cream and Caffè Latte. In 1996, Starbucks ventured out into the world and opened the first coffee house in Japan, and then Singapore. The chain already consists of more than 1,000 locations in America alone. In June 2007, the first Starbucks in the Netherlands was finally opened at Schiphol Airport.
Today, Starbucks has 17,651 (as of July 1, 2012) locations around the world.
Name and logo
The name
The name Starbucks comes from the book Moby Dick (Herman Melville), the first mate of the Pequod. The owners actually wanted to call the place Pequod, but the idea was rejected.
The logo
The logo depicts a siren from Greek mythology. It is a kind of mermaid with two tails that would originally have been bared. Later the breasts were covered by hair and she was no longer completely visible, only the tips of her tail. In 2011, the logo was adjusted again, with the letters disappearing.

In addition to coffee, Starbucks offers many other products, from drinks (bottles , chocolate milk, Frappuccinos, smoothies and tea) to food. There are sandwiches and paninis, but also fruit and yogurt. At Starbucks you can get ice cream in a Starbucks cup, but also bagels, cookies and muffins.
