Domestic violence

Domestic violence is committed by an acquaintance, someone from the home or family circle. There is a relationship between those involved: they are family members, (ex-)partners or there is a parent-child relationship.

Physical violence and psychological abuse

Domestic violence does not only involve physical violence. It also includes psychological abuse, humiliation and excessive control. Traditional practices such as circumcision are also considered domestic violence.

Domestic violence in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, approximately 200,000 people are victims of serious domestic violence every year. About 45 percent of adult Dutch people have ever been victims of some form of physical, sexual or psychological violence in the home.
The police receive more than 63,000 reports every year, and these are by no means all violent incidents. Fear and shame prevent people from reporting crimes. Some figures at a glance:

  • 5% of elderly people become victims

Men and women

The violence affects men and women. There are men who become victims of honour-related violence by family members. Human trafficking also affects both women and men.
Every year, approximately 13,000 women use women’s shelters in the Netherlands.

Children

Every year, more than 100,000 children in the Netherlands witness domestic violence. This violence is very drastic for the children.
